COACH ROLAND GENESY TALKS ABOUT WHAT SEPARATES
THE GOOD ATHLETES FROM THE GREAT ATHLETES

Coach Roland Genesy of Transforming Bodies Elite Sports Training was happy to know that many athletes were eager to be in the gym on their winter-break. Genesy expresses “these athletes made strength and conditioning training a top priority. He states “these athletes want to be better and they believe in our mission on how to get there.” Coach Genesy adds “many athletes have good genetics; but there are other physical and mental elements that make great athletes.”

Athletes need to understand their muscles will not function unless directed to do so by the brain. Athletes do not perform physical skills in isolation without mental skills. Genesy states “the mind has a lot to do with performance.” He believes in order to go to the next level and to become an elite athlete or a great athlete the body and mind must agree that challenges move athletes toward greatness.
Genesy outlines what separates the good athletes from the great athletes. Great athletes have amazing leadership skills, they are able to persuade and convince others to take appropriate action when the moment comes. Great athletes are coachable; they are students of the game.

Coach Genesy explains most high school and college athletes who see success early may think, "I'm already good at this. Why do I need to be better?" They see no need to train hard or work hard on skills that will make them better; but remember when you're not working on your skills, someone else is; and sooner or later, you will meet your opponent face to face; and the athlete that has less talent but demonstrates an intense work ethic will capture the victory. Great athletes have a killer instinct, exceptional read-and-react skills, and they are mentally tough and emotionally balance. They are focus, persistence, and they have a competitive nature.

Genesy states “it’s hard to get young athletes to understand talent alone will not make a great athlete.” Great athletes value strength and conditioning training. They are physically strong; they have phenomenal speed and coordinated agility. Great athletes understand strength creates a solid foundation for all other athletic qualities. Genesy adds “in order to increase speed, power, and agility an athlete must get stronger.” Once athletes increase their strength, they increase their body’s ability to apply force. Certainly, the athlete who is stronger and can apply more force in competition is usually the superior athlete. Sports like football, track, and basketball rely heavily on strength, For example, a running back needs to be able to cut on a dime to hit a hole or avoid a tackle. This movement happens in the blink of an eye. The athlete has to utilize his strength very quickly in order to apply that immense amount of force to the ground to make that cut quickly and explosively.

Athletes who strength train tend to have fewer injuries. This is because strength training strengthens the muscle attachments and increases density of bones at the sites of muscle origins and insertions. And if an injury does occur to an athlete who has been strength training properly, it will probably not be as serious and will tend to heal faster.

Genesy believes there are four types of athletes; the athlete with an appetite, the athlete that’s hungry, the athlete that’s starving, and the greedy athlete. He believes in order to be a great athlete you much be greedy.

The athlete that has the “APPETITE” will come into the gym and do the bare minimum to get through the workout so that he or she can feel good about himself or herself.

The athlete that is “HUNGRY” will come in with aggression, drive, determination, and one goal in mind...that is becoming a better athlete mentally and physically.

The athlete that is “STARVING” is the most powerful force to walk into the gym. This athlete uses adversity for energy; usually this athlete is in survival mode 24/7. This is one of the most aggressive athletes that a contender will ever encounter.

But, the “GREEDY” athlete is in a class of his or her own. Many athletes train their entire life and never reach this level. The greedy athlete exudes power, fitness, determination, and competitiveness. The greedy athlete is usually described as cocky, but the correct term is self-confident. This athlete is the best at what he or she does. Most greedy athletes have prioritized their goals and have reached perfection in their position. These athletes have set out to imprint a permanent design that will go down in history as “The GREAT.”
